Special Session by Seoul Energy Corporation (SEC)
Since 2012, Seoul has been active in enhancing energy self-sufficiency by reducing energy consumption and expanding renewable energy. Thanks to favorable city’s policy and citizen’s participation, capacity of PV, a relevant renewable technology in urban environment, remarkably increased to over 130MW in 2016. Further, Seoul announced in November 2017 a new program of ‘Solar City, Seoul,’ which set a bolder target to increase PV capacity up to 1GW by 2022.
Seoul’s green initiative is expected to bring about an opportunity for the city to move forward to a more sustainable energy system and inclusive economy. However, there are a number of economic and technological obstacles that needs to be overcome to achieve Seoul’s target. This special session will explore the opportunities and challenges of Seoul’s solar initiative and attempt to suggest some policy recommendations and technical options to address the problems.
